Lufthansa strikes Gold as its named ATW’s Eco-Aviation Airline of the Year

Coveted top honor recognizes Lufthansa’s comprehensive, company-wide commitment to eco-solutions and green initiatives
Air Transport World, a monthly aviation trade publication that reports on the international airline industry, yesterday announced that Lufthansa has been named “Eco-Aviation Airline of the Year,” the highest honour issued by the magazine’s first annual Eco-Aviation Awards.
“Lufthansa’s comprehensive environmental and sustainability efforts touch nearly every corner of the airline, and in many cases influence the entire industry,” said Karen Walker, Executive Editor of Air Transport World. “For example, the unprecedented long-term biofuel study that Lufthansa concluded in January will no doubt benefit the entire industry.”
Lufthansa’s application showcased the breadth of the company’s environmental efforts. Among them, the airline’s dedication to fuel-efficiency, which is achieved through an ongoing investment in fleet modernization, including adding the A380 and new 747-8 Intercontinental to the airline’s fleet and the development of a more effective flight-route planning solution; humanitarian relief that provides aid to communities struck by natural disasters and supports protection of endangered species; and vital umbrella support from senior-level management via Lufthansa’s cross-departmental Corporate Responsibility Council.
Winners were selected by the magazine’s editorial staff and members of ATW’s Eco-Aviation Conference Committee. ATW editors will present the award at a June 21st ceremony that will conclude the publication’s fifth Annual Eco-Aviation Conference, which is attended by high-level aerospace industry executives, operations management, government officials and represent-tatives of companies who are working with mainstream eco-aviation products.
