Beginning May 2018, Lufthansa Group will expand its network in Florida when it opens its fourth official gateway in the state. Specifically, Eurowings will operate the first direct, long-haul flights to Europe from Fort Myers airport (RSW) toboth Düsseldorf airport (DUS) and Munich airport (MUC) in Germany. This is in addition to the pre-existing services of Lufthansa Group airlines from its Frankfurt (FRA), Vienna (VIE) and Zurich (ZRH) hubs to Miami (MIA), Orlando (MCO) and Tampa (TPA). This enhancement further emphasizes Lufthansa Group’s continued commitment to the United States.
All flights from Florida, including the new Eurowings services, are code-shared with United Airlines as part of the Trans-Atlantic Joint Venture between Lufthansa Group, United Airlines and Air Canada. The joint venture comprises all of the airlines’ North Atlantic routes and associated connecting flights.
“Floridians will now have more options than ever before to fly direct to Europe and connect to the vast, worldwide network of Lufthansa Group’s passenger airlines,” said Larry Ryan, Lufthansa Group Senior Director of Sales for the USA. “With the addition of the Fort Myers Eurowings flights, passengers can experience the quality services and products of Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines and Eurowings from four airports in Florida.”
The Florida Gateways
Lufthansa Group connects Miami to Europe and beyond 21 times per week. Passengers have the choice between direct flights to Frankfurt (7 times weekly), Zurich (7 times weekly), Vienna (4 times weekly) and Düsseldorf (3 times weekly) on Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines and Eurowings, respectively. Not only do these flights leave at attractive times, they are also flown with some of the Lufthansa Group’s flagship aircraft, such as Lufthansa’s Airbus A380 and the SWISS’s Boeing 777.
Tampa is connected to Frankfurt, Zurich and beyond by five-weekly flights on Lufthansa and two-weekly flights on Edelweiss, a Lufthansa Group subsidiary and Switzerland’s leading leisure airline.
Fort Myers (RSW)
Starting in May, Eurowings will connect Fort Myers to its Düsseldorf and Munich bases. The airline will bring passengers to Germany five times per week, making it the only carrier offering direct, long-haul flights out of Fort Myers to Europe.
Lufthansa offers a daily flight between Orlando and its Frankfurt hub, where passengers have a wide array of connecting options in the Star Alliance network. In addition, Edelweiss offers a weekly flight, on Saturdays, to Zurich.
Lufthansa Group Airport Hub Information
Through its home base at Frankfurt Airport, Lufthansa offers reliable transfers for over 50,000 passengers every day. Together with its Lufthansa Group carriers and Star Alliance partners, Lufthansa also provides passengers connecting through Frankfurt with convenient access to the world’s largest airline network and more than 1,300 destinations worldwide.
Munich International Airport is Europe’s first five-star airport and the airport’s Terminal 2 was once again honored as the world's number one terminal by the London-based Skytrax Institute at the 2017 World Airports Award. Together with Munich Airport, Lufthansa offers its customers a 10-star product that represents excellent quality on the ground and on board. Terminal 2, and a corresponding Satellite Building that opened in April 2016, are a joint venture between Deutsche
Lufthansa AG and Flughafen Muenchen GmbH. A central hub for Lufthansa and its partner airlines, T2 includes five new Lufthansa lounges, as well as 27 additional gate positions that allow passengers to board aircraft directly, without bus transportation. Eurowings recently based three Airbus A330 here to start its long-haul operations out of Munich.
Due to its geographical position in the center of Europe, Vienna International Airport is one of the most important hubs for the growing number of destinations in Central and Eastern Europe.
Vienna International Airport handled over 24 million passengers in 2017, comprising a rise of 4.5% from the previous year. In particular, long-haul routes had a positive impact on the airport’s performance, as well as new flight connections and frequency increases on the part of the airlines.
The Zurich Airport was once again ranked third for its high level of customer satisfaction in the Airport Service Quality Award (ASQ) in 2017. Last year, over 29 million people arrived at, departed from or transferred to other flights at Switzerland's biggest airport. The trend in passenger volumes was again positive and reached a new record. Both aviation and non-aviation revenue increased in the reporting period.
With almost 25 million passengers and 222,000 flight movements in 2017, Düsseldorf Airport is the largest airport in North Rhine-Westphalia. Passengers can fly from Düsseldorf to 200 destinations in 55 countries. The city lies at the center of the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region, one of the economic backbones of Germany with over 10 million inhabitants.
