With its FlyNet® services and innovative technology, Lufthansa is one of the pioneers of civil aviation. As the first airline worldwide, Lufthansa introduced a hotspot on board and now maintains the largest international long-haul fleet with Internet access. Every passenger thus has access to a diversified communications and entertainment system, so that Lufthansa guests can remain connected with the rest of the world, even at an altitude of 10,000 meters. This is how FlyNet® works
Using FlyNet® with one's own tablet, laptop or smartphone is persuasively simple: you connect to Deutsche Telekom's hotspot via Wi-Fi and use it just like a public hotspot on terra firma. After opening the browser, you are automatically taken to the free Lufthansa FlyNet® portal. This portal offers numerous complimentary services and facilities and access to free the Internet options provided by German Telekom. After 15 minutes of inactivity, the Internet connection is automatically terminated. In order to continue surfing, you have to recall the Telekom hotspot and log in again. Possibly another submission of user name and password is necessary to reconnect to the network. Various tariffs and payment options are offered for the use of the Internet. Electronic divices on board
Thanks to FlyNet®, connection via the GSM mobile service is also possible. After reaching cruise altitude, it enables users to send and receive texts messages and MMS and to transfer data using smartphones. The prerequisite for this is that the respective mobile operator has a roaming agreement with our partner AeroMobile. The fees for use will vary depending on the mobile operator and users will be invoiced via their own cell phone bill.
How the Internet learned to fly
Almost fifteen years of experience and fine-tuning: Lufthansa is the first airline worldwide to offer an entire long-haul fleet equipped with hotspots and the largest international long-haul fleet with Internet access. Lufthansa FlyNet® is not only a milestone of first-class service – it is an impressive example of the technical pioneering spirit.
As normal as it is for us to use the Internet on the ground, as complex as it is to offer this service 10,000 meters above the clouds. Geostationary satellites, which the FlyNet® service accesses, orbit 36,000 km above the Earth. The satellites are distributed directly over the equator all around the world, as through strung on a pearl necklace. In order to allow on-board Internet access, an antenna that establishes a connection to the satellite and maintains it during the flight is located on the fuselage of the aircraft. When the airplane is en route, it sends signals to the nearest satellite, which are then transmitted to the ground and received again. What is vital is that there is a connection between the aircraft and the satellite. Should a plane leave a satellite's range of performance, the connection is passed on to the neighboring satellite.
The WLAN and GSM technologies used have been certified by the aeronautical authorities and shall ensure that neither the onboard electronics nor the flight frequencies may be disrupted.

- 2000: Lufthansa presents its innovative concept regarding FlyNet®.
- 2003: The world's first long-haul flight with on-board broadband Internet connection takes off.
- 2006: Already 69 airplanes of Lufthansa’s long-haul fleet are equipped with FlyNet®.
- 2012: Live TV is launched. That same year, the on-board provision of GSM mobile enables text messages and messages via MMS to be sent for the first time.
- 2014: 100% of long-haul aircraft are equipped with FlyNet®. Lufthansa is thus the first airline in the world whose entire long-haul fleet is equipped with broadband technology.
