Study on cabin air quality: since April 2013 The Lufthansa Group has made an active and conscientious commitment to research- ing the quality of cabin air and investigating so-called smell events. Whether the latter might be associated with health hazards or occupational safety is being analyzed intensively by the company in close coop- eration with national and international autho- rities, associations, research institutes and manufacturers. Between April 2013 and May 2015 Lufthansa conducted a compre- hensive study on the quality of cabin air in cooperation with the Institute for Occupa- tional Medicine at Hanover Medical School (MHH). The analyses were performed with a specially designed measuring kit, jointly developed by Lufthansa Technik and MHH. The intermediary analyses of measurement data prove that the cabin air is of high quality, comparable with indoor air on the ground, such as in of ces. The researchers found neither indications of increased levels of aldehyde nor of neuro- toxic ortho-tricresyl phosphates (o-TCP). This also applied to cases of documented smell events on board and to the analysis of engine oil. Furthermore, the concentra- tions measured always remained below valid German and international maximum values applicable to working environments. 200 substances are tested The analyses comprised data collected on a total of 108 short-haul and long-haul ights, including 64 measuring ights with 11 Airbus A380 aircraft and 44 ights with 15 Airbus A321 aircraft. The measuring kit allows the collection of air samples. These are analyzed at a labo- ratory and tested for about 200 typical indoor and hygiene parameters – including carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, ozone, more than 150 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as well as numerous types of alde- hydes and organophosphates. In addition, a so-called screening analysis is used to identify unknown substances in the cabin air. This scienti c study underscores the high priority that the Lufthansa Group gives to the health of passengers and crew mem- bers. It is a unique commitment worldwide and by far exceeds customary industry standards. The Lufthansa Group also participates in the study “Cabin Air Quality” conducted by EASA, the European Aviation Safety Agency, and carried out further measuring ights in this context in 2016. Laboratory Services and The Lufthansa Group also maintains the highest quality and safety standards con- cerning all uids used in the operation of aircraft systems. Guided by Lufthansa Technik’s Laboratory Services division in Frankfurt, uids are continuously subjected to chemical and physical laboratory analyses. An equally important role is assumed by the ve screening laboratories of Lufthansa Technik’s Central Materials Technology in Hamburg, which acts as an approved re protection institution for the aviation industry (see page 66, Balance 2015).
