Fleet modernization

The Lufthansa Group currently has more than 250 new aircraft on its order list. These reduce fuel consumption and thus CO2-emissions by up to 30 percent compared to their predecessors – on every flight.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) are a true alternative to fossil fuels and a key to more sustainable flying. Various production processes already exist today, others we are supporting in their development to bring to market.

Flying with sunlight

A solution for the future: The unique Sun-to-Liquid procedure uses concentrated sunlight to produce SAF. We want to be the first in the world to fly with it.

Based on renewable electrical energy

Another promising innovation: With Power-to-Liquid technology sustainable fuel can be produced from green electricity, water and CO2. The Lufthansa Group is driving the development of this technology.

Fly more sustainable today

Flying more sustainably with SAF: The SAF currently used by the Lufthansa Group is produced from biogenic residues, such as from used cooking oils.

Today, the Lufthansa Group is one of the largest customers worldwide, even though the quantities of SAF available are currently still small.

We are involved in numerous projects to increase SAF availability and work with partners from science and industry - from start-ups to established energy companies.

Measures to sustainably improve fuel efficiency

AeroSHARK –Inspired by nature.

AeroSHARK

As the world's first airline group, we are equipping aircraft with the innovative AeroSHARK aircraft surface film. It imitates the aerodynamic properties of sharkskin. This reduces the aircraft's drag and lowers fuel consumption and thus CO2 emissions - by approximately 1 percent in the current configuration.
