The Executive Board function Brand and Sustainability is responsible for defining, agreeing and adopting the overarching environmental management targets and activities. In addition, all larger subsidiaries have their own environmental departments, an environmental officer or a coordinator.

The Lufthansa Group has been operating a central environmental database for several years. One of its functions is to collect and process information and data that is relevant to the environment – such as on energy consumption – so this information can be employed in business decisions. The resource consumption recorded in this database and the emissions calculated on this basis are also used to determine the Lufthansa Group’s carbon footprint, with annual audits by external experts.

To support the systematic control and continuous optimization of environmentally relevant processes, the Lufthansa Group steadily advances the implementation of environmental management systems according to ISO 14001 or EMAS at the Group companies.
